Works combining performative aspects with film photography and new media…

The Out of the Inside

The following is a selected sequence on photographic processes with the addition of private performative aspects and drawing in painting on the body with non-traditional uses of beauty products. The resulting images are printed in large format inkjet prints and laminated for a high gloss texture.

I have found myself in our contemporary culture bound and enslaved, often seduced and wanting, but lacking, to roles and ideas that do not fit me as a person and as a woman. The media seeks to control individuals like myself in order to make a dollar, a notion I find dangerous and repulsive. However, I am not, nor are others, most likely, immune to the influence of popular culture's ideas of beauty and gender roles. In my private performances, documented in what I call photo shoots, the photographs are set to overwhelm the viewer, often in a small space to add an element of confrontation. The photographs should engage the viewer with questions, often uncomfortable in nature, in a slightly darkened space; and above all, make them think.
